Set and filmed
in Thamesmead, a working class area of London, Jamie (Glen Berry), a teen
who is more than a little infatuated with his handsome classmate, Ste
(Scott Neal), has to deal with his single mother Sandra (Linda Henry),
who is totally occupied with her ambitious plans to open her own pub,
and with her ever-changing lovers. Jamie's homosexuality, while he tries
to hide it somewhat, is reason enough for his classmates to maltreat him
wherever they can. Ste, who is living together with his drug-trafficking
brother and his alcoholic father in the apartment next door, one night
gets abused by his father so badly that...... the story tells of their
growing attraction for one another, from initial lingering glances to
their irrefutable love, which so magnificently illustrated at the end
of the film. In deals with the tribulations of coming to terms with their
sexuality and of others finding out, in light of Sandra's unwavering loyalty
and defense of Jamie and the fear of repercussion should Ste's family
find out.
Personally, I am not crazy about coming of age kiddie gay film. Beautiful
Thing is an exception. The story is so tender, loving and caring. It is
always heart warming to see fresh teens discover the beauty of spring
for the first time. The plot is not over comical or tragic as many British
gay films are subtle and well written....................................................................................................................Beautiful
