Zach (Trevor Wright)
is a 22-year-old aspiring artist who has put off his dreams of going to
art school in order to work and take care of his sister Jeanne (Tina Holmes),
his disabled father, and his five-year-old nephew Cody (Jackson Wurth).
Working as a short-order cook to make ends meet, Zach escapes during his
free time to paint, draw murals, surf, and hang out with his best friend
Gabe (Ross Thomas), as well as with his on-again, off-again girlfriend
Tori (Katie Walder). When Gabefs older brother Shaun (Brad Rowe) comes
home to cure a case of writerFs block, Zach and Shaun develop a close
friendship as Shaun encourages Zach to take control of his life and pursue
his ambition of going to art school. Their friendship develops into an
intimate relationship, while at the same time Shaun builds a strong bond
with Cody.... Folks deemed it as the gay surfer movie, but Shelter is
a riveting family drama and a story of first gay love set in a working
class world. There are no gay bars in Shelter, no drugs, no drag queens,
no circuit anthems, no gay-bashings, no AIDS scares, and no screaming
parents to speak of.
A wealthy and handsome gay man puts up with hangups of an uncertain young
boy, then literally shelters him under his wings.... this knight savior
may exist for real. Life can be sometimes sweeter than a Hollywood script.
Just don't expect him to be as cute as Shaun though. Zack rushes over
to Shaun and bursts into hot sex... the scene is the climax of the film.
