James Whale lived a
strange life. He directed Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and the
Invisible Man (among others). He resigned from directing, and spent much
of his free time painting. He was openly homosexual which wasn't exactly
accepted then. Sir Ian McKellen plays James Whale, near the end of his
life, a distraught man with an incurable illness that is eroding his mind
and ability to think straight. He befriends his heterosexual gardener
(Brendan Fraser). The main plotline focuses on their friendship. A hefty
portion of the film is in flashback form, especially as his gardener learns
more and more about Whale.
Uuuum, Brendan is young and handsome. He takes off his shirt and poses
for Whale's drawing. He dives into a swimming pool nude too. Towards the
end, he strips to all naked for Whales pathetic carnal desire. The movie
is all about Brendan's fresh body and masculinity which Whale fell for.
The film portrayed as if Whale had a hard time getting boys, which I doubt
is truthful, cause a wealthy renowned Hollywood director could have tasted
many pretty boys and aspiring actors, especially during the depression.
McKellen's performance is nothing short of amazing as always, almost born
to play Whale. If McKellen was not a prestigious actor, he wouldn't even
get a second chance at gay bars though.............................................................................................................Gods
