Boys in the Band (1970) - birthday camp........................................................................

/ next
It's Harold's birthday,
and his closest friends throw him a party at Michael's apartment. Among
Harold's presents is "Cowboy", since Harold may have trouble finding a
cute young man on his own now that he's getting older. As the party progresses
the self-deprecating humor of the group takes a nasty turn as the men
become drunker. Climaxed by a cruel telephone "game" where each man must
call someone and tell him (or her?) of his love for them.
In gay community, both the play and film are viewed as an embarrassment,
a minstrel show of campy, queeny self-hatred staged show for straight
audience's amusement. That is well said for lousy friends and soul stabbing
lines with Oscar Wilde touch. It is like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford
co-star in Who's afraid of Virgina Wolff. Gay men's over-hysteria and
self loathing are indeed amusing and self-reflective even for gay audience
because there is some truth to it. The film should have been critically
acclaimed 40 years ago for breaking into a new genre of gay camp though.........................
