Author E. M. Forster
knew the novel he began in 1913 about a British aristocrat and his love
affair with a male gardener would be very controversial if it had been
published in his lifetime, especially given that he insisted on giving
it a happy ending. The novel was finally published posthumously in 1971,
but the subject matter was still a hard sell when producer Ismail Merchant
and director James Ivory, real-life same-sex partners, decided to turn
the book into one of their trademark lavish period films. Marshaling the
clout theyfd earned from 1985fs Oscar-winning A Room With a View, they
produced this 1987 masterpiece, the worldfs first big budget gay period
film. Hugh Grant is wonderful in stuffed-shirt mode, but the movie really
belongs to James Wilby, who is superb as Maurice, and Rupert Graves as
Alec, the Worldfs Hottest Stable Boy. For most gay viewers, that amazing
nude bedroom scene is still fused directly onto our corneas.
I remember I saw this movie with my date 20 years ago at some kind of
college theatre in Brooklyn, New York. We took a subway from Manhattan,
and the train was late. We barely made it to the movie. My date was a
Harvard graduate with blond hair, blue eyes and glasses...a typical mid
west boy next door. As a matter of fact, he looked like one of those British
boys in the movie, pale, slim, goofy and cute, physically not exactly
my type, but he was attractive. Anyway, today, the movie is considered
a classic masterpiece. It won't betray its reputation enhanced by the
boys, synopsis, photography and ambiance. At the theater, there was a
hag sitting behind us. She was with her seemingly husband. Everytime the
boys in the movie came out nude, she was covering her eyes with her hands.
And at the end, when one boy marries a girl, this hag said, "At least,
one straightened out" I wanted to smack her hideous face...............
